The James W. and Betty Dye Foundation was founded to give qualifying high school graduates at particular high schools in Northwest Indiana grants for tuition. Seniors in high school are given Jim and Betty Dye Scholarships to honor their achievements in the classroom, their shown leadership skills, and their future potential. The James W. and Betty Dye Foundation is particularly interested in the economic growth and overall welfare of Northwest Indiana.

The Foundation is of the opinion that a more educated populace will improve everyone’s quality of life. While it is not a requirement to live and work in Northwest Indiana after obtaining a scholarship, some of the Foundation’s goals will be achieved if recipients of the Jim and Betty Dye Scholarship program do so.

Award Information

The maximum number of consecutive full-time undergraduate autumn and spring semesters for which a recipient is eligible for a Jim and Betty Dye Scholarship is eight (8) ($16,000 total). Universities may change the value of the Jim and Betty Dye Scholarship in accordance with other scholarships, grants, or awards awarded.

The Jim and Betty Dye Scholarship will be applied secondarily after any university-related and additional tuition scholarships, grants, or prizes have been received.

The Jim and Betty Dye Scholarship is not available to recipients of full tuition scholarships like the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, Hammond College Bound, the 21st Century Scholarship, etc.

All scholarship payments are made directly to the student’s university and are exclusively used for tuition. The student is responsible for paying all non-tuition expenses, including those for accommodation and board, books, transportation, parking, health, and extracurricular activities. Refunds are given back to the Foundation if a recipient departs the university in the middle of the semester.

Eligibility Requirements

The following requirements must be met in order for a senior from one of the participating Indiana high schools in the counties of Lake, Newton, Porter, or Jasper to be eligible to apply for a Jim and Betty Dye Scholarship.

The qualifying requirements must be met in order for an application to be considered.

  1. U.S. citizens are required.
  2. Must reside in Indiana’s Lake, Newton, Porter, or Jasper County.
  3. Must be a senior at a high school in Lake, Newton, Porter, or Jasper County, Indiana, that is currently taking part.
  4. Must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher (out of 4.0).
  5. Must score at least 1200 on the SAT and 25 on the ACT combined.
  6. Must be unconditionally admitted to one of the following colleges as a full-time undergraduate degree-seeking student:
  • Purdue University Northwest (PNW)
  • Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
  • Ball State University Muncie (BSU)
  • Indiana University Bloomington (IU)
  • Indiana University Northwest (IUN)
  • Purdue University West Lafayette (PU)

Jim and Betty Dye Scholarship

Application Method

Applications for the Jim and Betty Dye Scholarship are accepted from January 1 through March 1. By March 1st at 11:59 p.m. CT, eligible applicants must electronically submit the scholarship application. An official high school transcript and a letter of acceptance from the university serving as supporting evidence must be sent with the application.

Important: Never create an account, log in, or use a contact email associated with your high school. Applications using an email associated with a high school will be disregarded.

Selection Process

A committee made up of people from the town, state, and across the nation evaluates each scholarship application on the basis of academic, extracurricular, potential, and personal qualities.

The budget established by the Foundation’s Board of Directors determines how many new scholarships are awarded each year.

The Scholarship Selection Committee will email each candidate with its decision. It is strongly advised that applicants check their spam or junk email folders for correspondence from the Dye Foundation and/or Community Force. Email notices that are sent out late, are misdirected, or are lost are not the Foundation’s fault.

Reviewing applications and choosing any recipients are strictly the responsibilities of the James W. and Betty Dye Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee. Each application is assessed according to its individual qualities in terms of academic excellence, involvement in the community and at school, and future success potential.

The number of new Scholarships awarded each year depends on the quantity and caliber of applications received as well as the Foundation’s budgetary needs. High schools are not restricted to or awarded a particular amount of scholarships each year, and submitting an application does not guarantee that one will be awarded, received, or continued.

Renewal Criteria of the Jim and Betty Dye Scholarship

For up to eight (8) consecutive fall and spring undergraduate semesters, scholarships are automatically renewed on a semester-to-semester basis, provided that:

  • To be eligible for their Scholarship, recipients must keep their cumulative GPA at 3.0 and successfully complete an average of fifteen (15) credit hours every semester as full-time enrolled undergraduate students pursuing degrees.
  • After the publishing of grades for each semester, recipients must request an official transcript be delivered from the Registrar to the Foundation by USPS standard mail no later than January 20 and June 1 of that year. Do not ask for a PDF to be emailed!
  • The scholarship will be revoked if an official transcript isn’t submitted by the deadline for each semester or if you don’t meet the other eligibility standards.
