The Rare Disease Scholarships tagged #RAREis Fund was founded by the EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases to support individuals with rare diseases in a range of educational endeavors, regardless of their level of treatment. Up to 70 beneficiaries will receive $5,000 one-time scholarships for the Fall semester, made possible by Horizon Therapeutics plc.

Scholarship Description
The organization in charge of managing and designing scholarships and other educational support programs for businesses, foundations, associations, and individuals across the country is called Scholarship America®. The sponsor alone determines a program’s eligibility, and the evaluation team at Scholarship America looks over any qualifying applications. This scholarship offers awards to qualified applicants regardless of their creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, disability, or country of origin.

Benefits
The students will be given a $5,000 award if they are chosen as the winner. There will be up to (70) awards given out. Students may reapply to the program each year they complete the requirements even though awards are not renewable.
Awards are for accredited programs, such as undergraduate, graduate, and single classes that have been confirmed by an accredited program, as well as vocational-technical/trade schools.
Eligibility Requirements for the Rare Disease Scholarships
To be eligible for the #RAREis Scholarship Fund, candidates must be:
- Americans who, regardless of current medical treatment, have been diagnosed* by a doctor as having any kind of uncommon disease. An official Diagnosis Verification Form from a doctor attesting to the applicant’s diagnosis will be required.
- Enrolled full-time or part-time** in an undergraduate or graduate program at an approved two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical/trade school now or intending to enroll in the next fall semester.
- Veterans and non-traditional students are encouraged to apply, and the minimum age requirement is 17 years old.
*Undiagnosed applicants may submit an application with a doctor’s completed Diagnosis Verification Form.
**There is no minimum number of credits required to be deemed part-time; for instance, taking one class counts.

How to Apply
Please be aware that the application period for the 2023 #RAREis Scholarship has ended. In the spring of 2024, the application will be available.
- To begin your application, click here. The company chosen to handle the application will be referred to as Scholarship America.
- Create a profile or account on Scholarship America. If you applied the year before, you should already have an account, so just use your password to log in. You can enter the Scholarship America Hub with this short step.
- The Scholarship America Hub will generate ALL scholarships for which you are eligible after your profile has been created. The application procedure can then be started by searching for the RAREis Application and includes:
- You must upload papers with your application. Your most recent grade report card must be submitted. Not acceptable are grade reports.
- Unofficial transcripts and online versions must include the student’s full name, school name, grade, number of credits earned for each course, as well as the period during which the course was taken.
- A Diagnosis Verification Form must be completed and submitted as well.
- You must respond to the mandatory essay prompt.
Essential Documents
You must upload the following files as part of your application:
- Your most recent academic transcript (from high school, college, the GED, etc.) Not acceptable are grade reports. Unofficial or online transcripts must include the student’s name, school name, grades, and the number of credits earned for each course completed during each term.
- Diagnosis Verification Form. A doctor’s completed form needs to be uploaded to your application. All rules apply.
NOTE: You must upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately if you are giving SAT or ACT test results and those results are not shown on your high school transcript. These grades are not necessary if you are uploading your college transcript.
If not all essential documents are submitted online, your application is not complete.

Selection Method
The following criteria are used to choose scholarship winners:
- The Essay
- Shown initiative and involvement in school and community activities
- Working knowledge
- Academic achievement
The Essay Topic: In what ways can your education and career goals contribute to diversity, equity & inclusion, and/or accessibility for the rare disease community? (2,000 characters maximum)
Financial need will be taken into account.
Notification
In June, applicants will be contacted. Not all program candidates will be chosen as winners. Every year that they satisfy the requirements, students are eligible to reapply for the program.
The Awarding of Scholarships
The Everylife Foundation for Rare Diseases contracts with Scholarship America to handle scholarship disbursements. In one installment in August, payments are given to the individual and made out to the institution.
